Early antiviral type I interferon impairs lung metastasis

Invasive breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death among women. Metastatic spread of breast cancer to the lungs is common and is associated with markedly decreased lifespan. The immunosuppressive environment of cancer can increase susceptibility to viral infections, but how infections change the lung environment and influence lung metastasis is unexplored.

In this preprint (not peer-reviewed), Farias et al. investigate how the type I interferon (IFN) response induced by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection affects the initiation and progression of lung metastasis in a mouse model of breast cancer metastasis. Previous studies of influenza virus infection and B16 melanoma had shown contradictory results as to the influence of viral infection on metastasis.
