Cancer therapeutics consisting of tumour cell-targeted agents linked to cytotoxic molecules have already achieved notable successes, despite their variable efficacy. Now, writing in Advanced Materials, Chengyuan Dong, Zhuxian Zhou and colleagues report a modular and scalable approach to the design and construction of versatile multifunctional nanoparticles for cancer theranostics — a personalized medicine approach that combines diagnostic imaging with targeted molecular therapy. “Traditional approaches are like mixing random components in a box, leading to unpredictable results,” notes Zhou. “What we’ve created is a precision-engineered ‘all-in-one’ molecular system that solves this chaos,” he continues.
