In the version of this article initially published, there was a reference error in the last sentence of the Figure 2 legend, where the first reference for “dysautonomia” (ref. 12, Larsen et al. Front. Neurol. 13, 1012668 (2022)) was incorrectly cited as ref. 8, Xie et al. Nat. Med. 28 583–590 (2022). In addition, the second sentence in Box 1 has been revised to clarify the likelihood risk of post-acute symptoms and health problems for comparatively younger individuals with long COVID. The changes have been made in the HTML and PDF versions of the article.
