Neuropeptide S (NPS) acts in the mammalian brain to enhance arousal. In a new study, Angelakos et al. investigated which NPS-expressing (NPS+) neuronal subpopulations mediate this peptide’s effects.

Using transgenic mice, the authors identified three prominent clusters of NPS+ cells located in the lateral parabrachial area (LPBA), the peri-locus coeruleus region of the pons and the dorsomedial thalamus.
