There are two time windows when memory may be labile and vulnerable to editing: initial consolidation (red); and reconsolidation following reactivation (orange). Memory consolidation can be a relatively long process, but most memory-editing techniques target memories minutes to a day after their initial encoding. Techniques targeting memory reconsolidation are generally effective for minutes up to a few hours after memory reactivation.
