a, Correlation distance matrices for the tiled odour set obtained from odour-naive (same data as in Figs. 14) mice as well as mice passively exposed to a target mixture of two short-chain aldehydes and two short-chain ketones in the home cage (Methods, Fig. 4e, f). Passive experience with the mixture increases odour similarity specifically between mixture components (target comparisons indicated in the legend in blue), but not between target ketones and long-chain aldehydes or short-chain esters and short-chain acids with which mice had no previous experience (off-target comparisons indicated in legend in black, nave: 334 neurons, n = 3 mice; exposed: 742 neurons, n = 3 mice).
