  1. Initial filter used to sort place-name activity records into fine-resolution (≤25 km2) and coarse-resolution (>25 km2) geographic feature classes. Islands and island groups were sorted independently by their size (see Methods). Where small differences in spelling or use were present, as with ‘ice shelf’ and ‘ice-shelf’, these were made consistent to a single use before analysis.
