Extended Data Table 3 Inviolate and Negligibly Impacted Antarctic Wilderness areas

From: Antarctica’s wilderness fails to capture continent’s biodiversity

  1. Sizes of Inviolate Antarctic Wilderness and Negligibly Impacted Antarctic Wilderness areas across Antarctica, and within each of the ice-free Antarctic Conservation Biogeographic Regions (ACBRs28), modelled at a 25-km2 resolution. Inviolate and Negligibly Impacted Antarctic Wilderness areas are large (≥10,000-km2), contiguous areas of unvisited or negligibly impacted sites (that is, unvisited and infrequently visited sites, weighted by proportion of ice-free area per site), respectively. Because of resolution and rounding errors, total ACBR areas differ slightly (by <2 km2) from those published in Terauds and Lee28. Total ice-free area estimates derived from the spatial data for exposed rock of Burton-Johnson et al.75 for Antarctica.
