Extended Data Table 1 Comparison of large-scale studies of protected area (PA) maintenance of terrestrial vertebrate biodiversity

From: Protected areas slow declines unevenly across the tetrapod tree of life

  1. The current study is unique in evaluating effects of PA networks on population trends (1) across global and multiclass taxonomic extents while also (2) employing pre-analysis matching and controlling for site variables as covariates in analyses to reduce biases in comparisons with controls. Other large-scale studies of vertebrate trends have examined factors explaining variation across PA networks, but these studies did not compare trends within PAs to those outside of PAs as this was not their aim23,30,69,70,71.
