Total hours of fishing activity during 2017–2021 calculated from Global Fishing Watch’s AIS database, containing 52 billion vessel broadcast messages acquired from global providers ORBCOMM and Spire, compared with the fraction of total fishing vessels detected by SAR, which includes vessels not detected by AIS monitoring.
