a, Predicted size dependent energy for the S-to-S (SS, black line) and P-to-P (PP, red line) transitions. For the large 30 nm QD, the energy difference between SS and PP amounts to ca. 5 meV, i.e., much larger than the thermal energy at 4 K. b, PL spectrum for large 30 nm QDs showing a sizeable biexciton binding energy on the order of ca. 14 meV.
