Extended Data Fig. 2: High density lateral surface coverage of the human temporal lobe in English, Spanish, Mandarin speakers and Spanish-English bilinguals.

A. Wide and dense coverage of the superior temporal lobe across left and right hemispheres across participants. Anatomical location (MNI) of all electrodes plotted prior to subselecting for speech responsive electrodes. B. Highest counts of electrodes in the left and right hemisphere superior temporal and middle temporal cortices bilaterally. Highest counts of speech-responsive electrodes in superior-temporal cortex. In Spanish, English and Mandarin monolinguals, a majority of speech-responsive electrodes respond to both foreign and native speech, while a minority of electrodes show selective responses to either foreign or native speech. Similarly, in Spanish-English bilinguals, a majority of speech-responsive electrodes respond to both English and Spanish speech.
