  1. Corpus height and breadth taken as defined in ref. 51. The mesiodistal alveolar length of the C-P3 alveoli measured between the centers of the I2/C and P3/P4 interalveolar septa, and that of the P3-M3 alveoli between the center of the P3/P4 interalveolar septum and the distal alveolar margin of the M3 (Extended Data Fig. 4a–c). The C-M3 length is the sum of the two. Individual measurements of the Australopithecus and Paranthropus samples are given in Supplementary Table 1.
