The final particle sets of Pol ε-PCNA on matched DNA in the open conformation (a) and from the four proofreading states (b) were 3D-classified in with a mask around PCNA. The displayed volumes are reconstructions from individual particle classes (particle populations are indicated in percentages of the input particles), filtered to 5 Å resolution. Large movements (shift and tilting) of PCNA and the release of contacts between PCNA and Thumb or P domains are indicated with arrows.
