For a given year, the number of living individuals is calculated by summing up all individuals such that \(birth\_date\le year\le death\_date\). When not available, the date of birth (resp. death) is estimated from the estimated average longevity over the period. The vertical bars in 1650 and 1820 correspond to the two changes in the GDP per capita, the second one being associated with the Industrial Revolution.
