The extreme classes (GDPpc1 and GDPpc6) are defined based on the literature and the remining four classes are the result of a K-means clustering approach, published in Sachs, et al.9 and Moya, et al.28. Gridded global datasets for Gross Domestic Product and Human Development Index is used from Kummu, et al.10. Upper and lower classes for the GDPpc are taken from Stierli40. Gridded population counts are taken from CIESIN18.
