Taxonomic profiling across sample types and stations. We profiled the taxonomy of quality-controlled, paired-end metagenomic (MGX) and metatranscriptomic (MTX) reads and tRNA transcripts for coastal HP1 (a) and offshore STO1 (b). We averaged the relative abundances for classes that represent > 1% mean abundance of the total community across samples collected during sunlit hours (day) and those collected after sunset (night). The bar chart shows the fraction of reads with assignments resolving to at least phylum-level taxonomy. The identification of tRNA sequences was based on the GTDB database, and the identification of metatranscriptomic and metagenomic reads was based on the nr_euk database that utilizes taxonomy from NCBI. *Mamiellophyceae: GTDB does not identify eukaryotic organisms. %Flavobacteriia: Flavobacteriia is an NCBI class and an order in GTDB (c_Bacteroidia; o_Flavobacteriales). For tRNA sequences, the GTDB Bacteroidia class was dominated by reads matching to the order Flavobacteriales. ^Betaproteobacteria: Betaproteobacteria is not its own class within GTDB, and is part of the class Gammaproteobacteria.
