Total size of social groups subject to intensive monitoring by the Amboseli Baboon Research Project over time. Each group is represented by one data point for each hydrological year that it was intensively monitored and included in the study. Point size varies by group size, and lines connecting groups represent fission events (when groups permanently split) and fusion events (when groups permanently merged). Alto’s group, one of the two original study groups, and its daughter groups are represented in blue, and Hook’s group, the other original study group, and its daughter groups are represented in red. Acacia’s group was formed by the fusion of one daughter group from each lineage and is represented in purple. Asterisks indicate instances in which a group was dropped from intensive data collection.
