Legumes sanction non-fixing nodules. Nodules containing the fixing strain were significantly larger than nodules containing the fixing strain (paired t-test, t 13 = 7.7176, p = 3.307 × 10−6), indicating that pea plants preferentially allocated resources to fixing nodules.
