(A) A typical line profile of elemental distribution along the calamus and rachis of a shearwater breast feathers. The elements Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn and Br are found along the length of feather in discrete non-overlapping patterns, suggesting independent mechanisms of deposition. Data was plotted along the length of the rachis and calamus after normalising to the maximum intensity.
