  1. Data was collected over three days in February 2016 at the lagoon site L1 and reference site R1, and during eight days in March 2016 at L2 and R2. Total alkalinity (A T) was determined from discrete water samples (see Methods, n = 9 and 6 for R1, R2, n = 6 and 3 for L1, L2). For the remaining variables, n = 138 for R1 and L1; n = 408 for R2 and L2).
