Semantic control trial design. Trials began with a fixation cross, followed by a central prime for 2 s, in an identical manner to bCFS trials. Following the prime, a visible rather than suppressed target word was presented binocularly, accompanied by cues for a semantic congruency task. ‘Up’ indicated that the visible target is congruent with the preceding prime category, ‘down’ indicated that the visible target is incongruent with the preceding prime category. This screen was held until a response was made. Note: to aid illustration, contrast and size of words has been increased.
