From: Hydrogen self-diffusion in single crystal olivine and electrical conductivity of the Earth’s mantle

Deuterium diffusion profiles (plotted as 16O2H− /28Si−, which is directly proportional to deuterium concentration in olivine) as a function of distance normal to faces oriented along [100] (blue diamonds), [001] (red triangles) and [010] (yellow circles), with lines showing fits (equation 1, see text). Data are for experiment PC25 (2 GPa, 750 °C). Average background 16O2H− /28Si− values were monitored to be 10−5–10−6 by measuring nominally anhydrous San Carlos olivine, considered to be a blank for 2H. Diffusion profiles along all principal orientations were observed to decrease to background noise values at approximately 150, 60 and 30 µm for this experiment, depending on orientation.
