Calibrated phylogenetic hypothesis of pycnodontiform interrelationships. This cladogram (based on a simplified version of the tree shown in Supplementary Fig. S4) shows the disparate origins of Paleogene pycnodont fishes, which are represented by the serrasalmimid Serrasalmimus and by a few members of the Pycnodontidae.
