The analysis and evaluation method. (a) Fluorescence images for different trap frequencies and normalized photon distributions in the axial direction for ν z  = 108,202 kHz. (b) Probability density P(ρ z ) and normalized photon distributions when applying continuously an external time-varying dipole field in the axial direction. In the presence of the laser field, the ion oscillates with a constant amplitude. The signals are built averaging the detected photons in 2–3 rows of pixels in the radial direction.
