Basic concept of all-optical tunable buffering with coupled silica toroid microcavities. (a) Schematic illustration of the buffering operation. The system consists of two cavities denoted C1 and C2, and only C2 couples to the tapered optical fibre. (b) Numerical results of the buffering operation. The top, middle, and bottom graphs represent the signal light energies in C1 and C2, and the output signal power, respectively. The solid and dashed lines are calculated with and without control lights, respectively. The control light is being input in the red region, and the solid grey line in the bottom graph represents the input signal power. The intrinsic Qs of C1 and C2, and the coupling rate between C1 and C2 are set at 5 × 107, 2 × 106, and 2π × 96 MHz, respectively. The peak power of the control pulse is 10 W.
