Vδ2+ T cell expression of markers of exhaustion and replicative senescence correlate with loss of effector functions. Vδ2 expression of CD57 (A) and Tim-3 (B) on freshly isolated PBMCs among asymptomatic children compared between children living in high (Nagongera, n = 80) vs low (Walukuba, n = 54) transmission settings. Both CD57 (B) and Tim-3 (C) expression associated with reduced Vδ2+ T cell cytokine production following in vitro stimulation. In high transmission setting, CD57 expression on Vδ2+ T cells associated with increasing age (E); Tim-3 expression associated with infection status at the time of measurement (F).
