Dependence of the shape of Yb3+ in the crystal field on the direction of an applied magnetic field. Yb3+ is surrounded by one F− (gray spheres) and six O2− ions (red spheres), which is the same as the 6 h site in FAP (bold arrows indicate the crystal axes of FAP). The dependence of the shape of Yb3+ in the crystal field on the direction of the applied magnetic field causes the anisotropy of the total angular momentum of 4 f electrons in RE3+ along the applied magnetic field J z.
