Figure 3(a) shows the distribution of the water withdrawal data and the groundwater data that are used in this study, and Fig. 3(b) shows the annual average energy use of per unit-area groundwater exploitation. The energy use for lifting water is more concentrated in large cities and the irrigated area in Hebei Province. The maps were created using ArcGIS 10.2 (http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis-for-desktop).
