Trial sequence. Each trial started with a white fixation cross for 1 s accompanied by a short beep, and then a movie was presented in the centre of the screen for 6 s (Supplementary Video 1). Following a 1 s blank screen after the movie, a computer-based visual analogue scale (VAS) was presented on a 400-pixel horizontal line. In the response period, participants indicated their perceived emotional valence (negative-positive) of the movie within 3 s using a red cursor controlled by two buttons with their right thumb. The inter-trial interval was jittered from 2.5 to 5.5 s (mean interval of 4 s). Each participant performed 72 trials in a pseudo-randomized order.
