Patients with early stage (SH1) steatohepatitis already show neuronal loss in the Purkinje and granular layers. H&E stain was performed as described in methods. Neuronal density was quantified (C and F). (D) Shows a possible case of phagoptosis, where a Purkinje cell is phagocytosed by an activated microglial cell (bar 50 μm). One-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc test was performed to compare all groups. Values are the mean ± SEM of 4–9 individuals per group.
