Evaluation of apoptosis/necrosis and kidney function in transplanted mice. Staining for apoptosis/necrosis revealed larger TUNEL+ areas (green) in UW treated controls (A; DAPI in blue) compared to CHC-treated kidneys (B). Image analysis of the TUNEL staining revealed significantly more apoptosis/necrosis in control kidneys (6.87 ± 1.45%) compared to CHC-treated kidneys (C, 2.70 ± 0.88%; p = 0.041). Recipients of CHC-treated kidneys had lower levels of serum creatinine at 24 h post transplantation (213 ± 13 μmol/L vs 137 ± 21 μmol/L; p = 0.026), suggesting better kidney function compared to recipients of kidneys treated with UW alone (D).
