All experiments were done at a temperature of 500 ºC, an effective normal stress of 120 MPa and a fluid pressure of 80 MPa. x denotes load-point displacement, γ is engineering shear strain (= displacement/instantaneous layer thickness), μinitial is the friction at γ = 1, h0 is the layer thickness at the start of shearing, μfinal and hfinal are the friction and the layer thickness at the end of shearing, respectively.
