Contact between the finger and surface yields distinct regions of contact (lengths L i ), and local surface stresses σ p and σ r normal and tangential to the surface at a point within each region. Variations in surface height h(x) are accompanied by changes in slope α(x), with dh(x)/dx = tan α(x).
