Cell proliferation and apoptosis in the kidney with PC-AKI. Cell proliferation was determined by immunostaining for Ki-67 (A and B) and apoptosis (C and D) was assessed by TUNEL staining in kidney sections at day 7 of contrast (C) or saline (S) administration. All images are at 40X magnification. Arrowheads indicate brown nuclei positive for Ki-67 (A) and TUNEL (C) respectively. The percentage of nuclei that stained for Ki-67 (B) or TUNEL (D) were determined. Each bar represents mean ± SEM of 4–6 animals per group. Two-way ANOVA with Student t test with Bonferroni correction was performed. Significant differences between the respective time points among C and S indicated by * at P < 0.05.
