Anti-depressant (SSRI) treatment ameliorates depression and recovers skin barrier function impaired by elevated epidermal cortisol and 11β-HSD1 activation. (A) Basal TEWL, (B) SC integrity, and (C) SC hydration decreased after treatment with the SSRI escitalopram versus before medication (n = 5). (D) Skin surface pH also tended to decrease after SSRI medication treatment, but statistical significance was not observed.
