β-galactosidase activity level of Pshp144-lacZ-wt reporter strain in the absence (vehicle) or presence of different length 250 nM synthetic SHP144 peptides. Pneumococcal cultures were grown microaerobically and early exponential phase cultures were used for expression analysis. The activity is expressed in Miller Units (nmol p-nitrophenol/min/ml). Values are average of three independent experiments each with three replicates. Error bars indicate the SEM (*p < 0.05, *****p < 0.0001).
