(c) A schematic illustration of the effect of the membrane impedance on the coincidence detection property: Input neurons (A) send different pulse trains to a high-impedance (B) and low-impedance (C) neurons. Neuron B requires only three coincident inputs to fire, while Neuron C requires five coincident inputs. Although the influence of individual synapses is smaller in Neuron C, the larger dendritic field would permit the neuron to receive synaptic inputs from more neurons than Neuron B.
