Binding of HAL1166 and SA11 VP8* to HBGAs measured by saliva-based binding assay. VP8* proteins from two cell culture-adapted strains (HAL1166 (P[14]) and SA11 (P[2])) were tested for binding to a panel of previously well-defined A, B, O, secretor and Lewis types saliva samples (SE = Secretor (FUT2 + ); se = non-secretor (FUT2); Le+  = Lewis positive (FUT3+); le = Lewis negative (FUT3); A = Blood group A). HAL1166 VP8* (a) binds to mucins of SE/A phenotypes only (SE non A n = 28, SE A n = 16 and se n = 15) whereas SA11 VP8* (b) does not bind to human salivary mucins (SE/Le+ n = 32, SE/le n = 12, se/Le+ n = 11 and se/le n = 4). Mann-Whitney test was used to compare groups (***p < 0.001).
