From: Effects of Geometry on the Electronic Properties of Semiconductor Elliptical Quantum Rings

Energy levels of an electron confined in an elliptical QR as functions of Rx1, keeping constant Ry1 = 15 nm for transversal parabolic profile. Different numbers of hills have been considered: (a) n = 0 (constant height of the ring such as in Fig. 2(a2)); (b) n = 2 (such as in Fig. 2(b2)), corresponding to a pair of equivalent and opposite hills, denoted by symbol “h1”; and (c) n = 4 (such as in Fig. 2(c2)), corresponding to two pairs of equivalent and opposite hills, denoted by symbols “h1” and “h2”. In panel (d) there are shown the first ten lowest energy levels corresponding to the same configuration of panel (a) but with 5 nm ≤ Rx1 ≤ 60 nm.
