(a) Schematic of stimuli used for each condition. (a) For the circular condition, the target was always the inside circle. (b) For the horizontal condition the target was always the top rectangle and (c) for the vertical condition the target was always the right rectangle. The task in each case was to identify whether the target was behind or in front of the reference. Participants were required to stay fixated on the cross at all times. (b) Participants were required to indicate for each presentation whether the target was in front of or behind the reference, immediately after which a confidence decision (sure or unsure) was required. The procedural schematic shows a border to separate target and reference, and the relative location of the fixation cross for information only.
