The effects of melatonin on mRNA expressions of cytokines mediated by TLR9 in peritoneal macrophages. Peritoneal macrophages were pre-treated with 1 mM MT or solvent control (ethanol, E) for 1 hour and then stimulated with 2 μg/ml CpG-ODN for 0, 1.5 or 3 hours. TNF-α (A), IL-6 (B), IL-12 p35 (C) IL-12 p40 (D), IL-10 (E) and IFN-β (F) mRNA expressions were detected by real-time PCR. Data are shown as mean ± s.d. (n = 3). *P < 0.05, **P < 0.01 (Student’s t-test). Similar results were obtained in three independent experiments.
