ABC transporter transcripts are expressed in airway epithelial cells throughout airway tree generations. Gene expression levels for all 48 ABC transporter members were examined across the trachea, large airways (generation 2nd-3rd), and small airways (generation 10th-12th) using a single dataset (GSE11906, Affymetrix Human Genome U133 Plus 2 microarray platform) comprised of independent epithelial cell samples isolated from healthy, non-smoking individuals. A representative probeset for each ABC transporter was chosen and average signal intensities (with standard error) for each probeset were calculated and visualized as a bar plot using ggplot2 in R (v. 3.4.3). grey = small airways, blue = large airways, orange = trachea.
