In vitro cell culture model systems are capable of recapitulating in situ observations of ABC transporter expression patterns and changes with cigarette smoke exposure. Expression levels of the ABCA13 and ABCC1 genes in Calu-3 cells grown under submerged monolayer conditions were assessed after exposure of cells to 10% and 20% cigarette smoke extract (CSE) conditioned media for 24 hours. Expression is relative to GAPDH levels and also compared to a negative control (unexposed Calu-3 cells) (a) ABCC1 expression increases under these conditions, whereas (b) ABCA13 expression decreases as % CSE increased with no impact on cell viability (c). One-way ANOVA was performed with a Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons with a significance determined at p < 0.05. n = 3 *p < 0.05 relative to control.
