Proposed mechanisms of nanostructure development. (a) High flux rate of precursor vapor produces rapid growth of anatase crystals with unstable periodic step edges which become capped with carbon and result in segmented plate nanostructure. (b) SEM image of a mille-feuille anatase column top with primary segmentation and illustration of secondary segmentations. (c) Rapid growth causes dendrite generation in rutile crystals as illustrated in the SEM image of an HF etched strobili dendrite.
