Effects of physical exercise on metabolic and inflammatory effectors in NAFLD. Physical exercise in the context of NAFLD counteracts the unfavorable steatotic, pro-inflammatory phenotype with insulin resistance by (1) increasing AMPK-α activation with beneficial effects on hepatic de novo lipogenesis, (2) anti-inflammatory effects evident by decreased NF-κB p65 activation as well as reduced macrophage recruitment and (3) increasing Akt activation and insulin sensitivity in the liver.
