Aphid rearing and sample collection. As detailed in the methods, sixteen sets of aphids were used in this study. First, aphids were subjected to a solitary or crowded environment for 16 h respectively. Then, after 16 h of solitary or crowded environments, aphids were individually returned to wheat seedlings to feed and monitored for molting every day to collect all the developmental stages of aphids.
