Photographs of cells sampled from the continuous flow cultures here reported. Images in the left column were taken with a phase contrast objective, while the images on the right column represent to the same bacteria as those in the left, but in them the corresponding fluorescence (with background fluorescence subtracted) and the phase contrast images have been overlaid. These images illustrate the different types of observed cells (A) almost zero fluorescence, (B) distributed fluorescence, (C) distributed fluorescence plus fluorescence concentrated in a focus, (D) almost all fluorescence concentrates in a focus.
