Topography and winter surface chlorophyll-a concentration (December–February average) in the Maritime Continent. Major rivers are indicated by blue lines. Chl concentration is high in coastal and shallow areas (<50 m) but much lower in the deep ocean, with a difference of up to two orders of magnitude.
