PTx venom increases vascular permeability to plasma albumin. Extravasation of albumin was monitored by pre-injecting anaesthetised Wistar rats with Evans Blue, a dye that binds with high affinity to albumin47. Subcutaneous injection of 0.01 mg/kg PTx venom into the depilated lower back skin of these rats caused marked extravasation of the dye measured by its infrared fluorescence response to stimulation with blue light (Methods). Physiological buffered saline (PBS) did not cause a significant change (P < 0.0001 for all data points over the marked region; paired t test; n = 4).
